Current AIDS Statistics

 

Here is a summary of all the current AIDS statistics worldwide and in America.

· There are estimated to be around 33.2 million people living with HIV or AIDS worldwide today.
· Last year, around 2.5 million people were newly infected with HIV.
· Around 2.1 million people died from AIDS last year (2007).
· Around 22.5 million people who are currently infected with HIV or AIDS are living in Africa.
· The second highest number of people living with HIV or AIDS in an area is 4 million within South and East Asia.
· Of the 33.2 million people living with HIV or AIDS worldwide, current AIDS statistics show that 30.8 million of these are adults and 2.5 million are children.
· Over 0.4 million children were newly infected with HIV in 2007.
· It is estimated that of these children infected, 0.33 million died in the year 2007.
· A total of 25 million people have died from AIDS since the year 1981.
· Because of HIV and AIDS deaths, there are over 12 million orphans in Africa. These are children under the age of 18 years whose parents have been killed by AIDS or HIV.
· Of the 2.5 million people newly infected with HIV each year, 50% of them are under the age of 25 years.
· In developing countries, over 9 million people are in need of urgent medical treatment and antiretroviral drugs. Only around 3 million of these are receiving this much needed treatment.
